Doug Koopman

Doug Koopman is professor of political science at Calvin College. He has an M.T.S. from Wesley Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in American government from the Catholic University of America. His specialties are American political institutions and religion in American politics. At Calvin, Doug has also been interim director of its Center for Social Research, the initial program director of the Paul B. Henry Institute for the Study of Christianity and Politics, and executive associate to the college’s president for strategic planning. In 2005 and 2006, Doug shaped and started a leadership center for undergraduates at his undergraduate alma mater Hope College. From 1980 to 1995, Doug and his wife Gayle lived in Washington, D.C. while he worked for various Republican members of the House and Senate in personal, committee and leadership offices. From 2015 through summer 2017 he spent most of his time in Washington, D.C., teaching and then working in advocacy for the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU).
